Medication Compounding

What is Compounding? Compounding is the art of customizing medications.  Before the mass marketing of prescription drugs, pharmacists routinely made up medications to meet the needs of the individual. However, with the standardization of medications, the uniqueness of the individual has been left out.

With medication compounding, Sid’s   Pharmacy can meet the special needs of each customer.  We can change the form of the medication, customize the dosage or strength, and even improve the taste!

Compounding is especially valuable in circumstances like hormone replacement, where small dose changes can make a big difference in symptoms.  Plus, we use only bio-identical ingredients in our hormone compounds.

Animals may require medication doses in strengths that are not commercially available.  For our four-legged family members, we offer a full range of veterinary compounds.  If you don’t want to fight to pill your cat, let us make her a yummy treat.  In some cases, we can put the medication in a cream and you can apply it to your pet’s ear.

Some of our most popular compounds:

Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy – Your personalized prescription can be put into many different forms, including a cream that you simply rub on a small area once or twice daily.  Typically made up of 1-3 different hormones, as your symptoms change we can adjust the dosing to meet your needs.

All-Purpose Nipple Cream – For our breast feeding moms, an anti-fungal, antibacterial cream that helps heal cracked nipples and reduce the risk of mastitis and yeast infections.  Safe for baby too!

FAQ

Are compounded prescriptions covered by insurance? It depends on the medication and the insurance company.  We have had good success billing some insurance companies, but most often you will have to pay at least a co-pay.

Can I get any medication compounded? We can only compound medications that are not currently available.  If you want a medication in a liquid that is only available in a tablet, we can change the medication form.  We can also compound medication in a hypoallergenic or preservative free form.

How long does it take to get my medication compounded? Because each medication is made to your specifications, it is very time consuming.  Please allow us 3 business days to get your medication ready.  If you do not have any refills on your prescription, you’ll want to give us 5 days notice so we have time to contact your physician.

I’m struggling with menopausal symptoms.  Can bio-identical hormone  therapy help?  How does my doctor know what I need? Bio-Identical hormone therapy can definitely help.  The first step is to get your current hormone levels tested  so the doctor knows what needs to be supplemented.  You can stop by the pharmacy to pick up a free test kit.  When the results come in, we’ll work with your doctor to individualize a hormone replacement program that is personalized to your needs.
